FAQ

Questions tanker crew actually ask

Certification, pay, contract length and hiring routes — grouped by what you need before, during, and after a tanker contract.

CERTIFICATION & ELIGIBILITY
Do I need tanker-specific certification to work on an oil tanker?
Almost every onboard role requires STCW Basic Training plus the Basic Oil & Chemical Tanker Familiarization course (V/1-1). Officers and ratings with cargo duties on crude or product tankers also need the Advanced Oil Tanker Cargo Operations course (V/1-2). Without these, agencies generally won't submit your CV for tanker positions.
Can I start on a tanker with no prior sea experience?
Entry-level rating positions — Ordinary Seaman, Deckhand, Trainee Motorman — sometimes accept candidates with STCW Basic Training and tanker familiarization but no prior sea time. Officer and senior engine positions almost always require documented sea service on tankers or similar vessel types first.
What documents do agencies usually ask for?
A valid passport, seaman's book, STCW certificates (including tanker endorsements), a medical fitness certificate (ENG1 or equivalent), and your Certificate of Competency if applying as an officer. Some flag states also require a yellow fever certificate or visa depending on the trading route.
SALARY & CONTRACTS
What's a realistic salary range on an oil tanker?
Ratings (AB, Oiler, Cook) typically earn $1,800–$3,000 per month. Junior officers and engineers (3rd/4th Engineer, 2nd Officer) range from $2,500–$5,000. Senior officers and engineers (Chief Engineer, Chief Officer) often earn $6,000–$10,000+, and Masters can reach $10,000–$14,000 depending on vessel size and flag state.
Are tanker jobs paid by day rate or monthly salary?
Both structures exist. Offshore-support and DP-related roles (AHTS, PSV) are frequently quoted as a day rate, while standard ocean-going tanker contracts are usually quoted as a fixed monthly salary. Always confirm which structure applies, and whether overtime or bonuses are included, before signing on.
How long is a typical tanker contract?
Most deep-sea tanker contracts run 4 to 6 months. Some companies offer shorter 3-month contracts for senior officers, while offshore support and DP positions sometimes run on rotational schedules of 4-6 weeks on, equal time off.
Do tanker jobs pay more than other vessel types?
Generally yes, for the same rank — tanker work involves hazardous cargo handling and stricter certification requirements, which is reflected in higher base pay compared to general cargo or bulk carriers for equivalent positions.
HIRING & APPLICATION
How do I find legitimate oil tanker job openings?
Work through established crewing agencies and job boards that list verified vacancies with named ship management companies — not unsolicited offers through social media or messaging apps. Cross-check the manning agency's name and license before paying any fee; legitimate agencies do not charge jobseekers for placement.
What should I check before accepting a tanker job offer?
Confirm the vessel name, flag state, contract length, exact salary or day rate, joining date and location, and the manning agency's licensing. Get the offer in writing before traveling to join, and verify the vessel's details independently where possible.
Why do tanker job listings show a day rate and monthly equivalent?
Many vacancies quote a day rate (e.g. $250/day) alongside its monthly equivalent (about $7,500) so candidates can compare offers consistently against monthly-salary positions, since contract lengths and rotation patterns vary by vessel type.
